Visit to Parliament

Last week, I had the privilege of visiting Parliament and gaining a deeper understanding of how government operates — a complex and multifaceted system.

During my visit, I spent time with Mr. Ian Roome MP and observed him raise a question about dentistry shortages in North Devon during Prime Minister’s Questions. I also had the honour of briefly meeting Jess Phillips MP, the current Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls, along with several other key staff members. It was encouraging to see that social care and education are recognised as priorities, even if they are not yet at the forefront of the agenda.

A highlight of the visit was my meeting with Sir Ed Davey MP, where we discussed the importance of children’s social care — particularly residential care — as a vital yet often overlooked part of the broader social care system. Sir Ed’s passion for social care was truly inspiring. Despite the challenges facing the sector, I left the conversation feeling hopeful and reassured that we have a strong advocate in Parliament.

I also had the opportunity to share the success story of Nellie’s Coffee Bar in Barnstaple, part of our Community Interest Company, Blue Elephant Future Steps CIC. Nellie’s supports children in care and care-experienced young people as they begin their employment journey in a trauma-informed, supportive environment. Sir Ed Davey MP visited Nellie’s earlier this year and expressed his continued support for its work.

Observing Ian Roome MP in action highlighted the demanding nature of an MP’s role. Managing multiple responsibilities and workstreams requires exceptional organisation, and his parliamentary aide, Jevon, plays a key role in keeping everything on track.

Overall, I left London with a sense of accomplishment, knowing that I had effectively advocated for children’s social care — and that my voice was heard.
